Five reasons to refill your reusable water bottles

At Lucid Water, we encourage people to refill their reusable water bottles rather than buying individual-sized plastic water bottles. Why you ask? Well here are five good reasons:

  1. You won’t add more plastics to our landfill or use precious energy to recycle them. Did you know that the average American used 167 disposable water bottles last year but only recycled 38? Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio-degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes.

  2. You will be reducing your use of fossil fuels by refilling your water bottles. The manufacturing and transportation of disposable water bottles requires petroleum, a non-renewable resource. It takes over 1.5 million barrels of oil to meet the demand of U.S. water bottle manufacturing. This amount of oil far exceeds the amount needed to power 100,000 for a year, which does not include fossil fuel and emissions costs of greenhouse gases needed to transport the final product to market.

  3. Ironically, you will be conserving water when you refill your own water bottles. It is estimated that actually 3 litres of water is used to package 1 litre of bottled water.

  4. You can save money. Even when buying a Lucid under counter filtration system, you save money in the long run by refilling your own water bottles.

  5. Research is ongoing as to whether plastic water bottles can leach hazardous chemicals into the water, especially when heated. So in the meantime, why take the risk? You can easily avoid leaching chemicals from plastic by using non plastic water bottles.

The message is simple – if you drink water, get a reusable bottle.

I have heard people say that it’s just too inconvenient to refill their reusable water bottles. Well, with a little pre-planning, you will see how easy it is to avoid buying plastic water bottles. I recently asked one of our Lucid Water customers to describe how he keeps hydrated, and this is what he said…

“My days are typical I think…In my car I have an extra-large stainless steel coffee cup. I refill it either from our dispenser at work or home and always have water in my car – always. It just looks like I drink a LOT of coffee.

At my work desk I have a plastic bottle with a straw, its 1 litre. Everyone I work with, either in our office or in our testing lab has some sort of refillable water bottle. No kidding, literally everyone.

At home I ride bike and play golf and they share the same plastic bottle with an easy release cap that I just pop into my mouth and pour and viola… water. Then lastly I have a stainless steel bottle that I take with me and when we’re traveling out and about. I either carry it or have a friend put in their bag.”

Like any habit, it gets easier when you just do it. Who is old enough to remember when wearing seat belts became a mandatory law? At the beginning it was a challenge to remember.  Today it is second nature. We just put our seat belt on.

So it is with water. If you’re a water drinker you just drink water. And if you’re like me and a lot of other water drinkers, you have more than one reusable bottle – some plastic, some stainless steel, some with polka dots, some with stripes, some with your favorite team, band, movies star, or super hero.
